The Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, is commonly referred to as the RISD Museum. With a collection of 84,000 pieces of art, RISD Museum is the leading museum of fine and decorative art in Rhode Island. The museum is a complex of public galleries spread among five buildings, the first of which opened in 1893. The museum’s collection is categorized by ancient, Asian, decorative and contemporary art; costume/textiles; painting and sculpture; and prints, drawings and photographs. The museum also hosts a variety of special exhibits throughout the year. Other arts programs open to the public include lectures, workshops, gallery talks and tours. The RISD Museum is closed on Mondays and major holidays.
