September 26, 2013 ~ Another celebration of WaterFire will take place in Providence this weekend. One of my absolute favorite performances will take place – the koi fish procession. This is truly remarkable and if you haven’t seen it…you surely should! Imagine…crackling fires along the Providence River with illuminated over-sized koi “swimming” upstream above the flames. It’s so beautiful that it’s breath-taking.   Volunteers dedicate their time (and canoes, kayaks, etc) to assist in this project of art.  In fact, WaterFire could not take place without their loyal team of volunteers and the donations they collect throughout the season. Be sure to stop by and see how you can help.

So don’t miss out on this weekend’s WaterFire. The koi fish and all the other events will certainly make for a fun evening.

Fall Arrives in Providence This Weekend

About 2 years ago by Jennifer |  No Comments   comment

September 19, 2013 ~ The first day of autumn is this Sunday. Do you welcome it with open arms or are you like me…clinging onto summer as if your life depends on it? I don’t know why I resist it every year. Fall is such a beautiful time of year to visit Providence. The weather is usually great – warm during the day and crisp at night – no humidity. The East Side is simply gorgeous! As the leaves turn, it becomes a picturesque  New England neighborhood. A stroll down Benefit Street is sure to leave you wanting to discover the RISD Museum of Art. The Museum of Art Rhode Island School of Design acquires, preserves, exhibits, and interprets works of art and design representing diverse cultures from ancient times to the present. Distinguished by its relationship to Rhode Island School of Design, the Museum educates and inspires artists, designers, students, scholars, and the general public through exhibitions, programs, and publications. By booking the Art, Food & Wine Experience, you can visit the museum, enjoy a bottle of wine upon arrival to your room and have a bite to eat in the infamous Providence Marriott Greatroom. With the holidays fast approaching, you will not want to miss RISD Works – some locals refer to it as the Museum’s gift shop but it’s so much more. All items for sale are true works of art and are designed by alumni and staff of the Rhode Island School of Design. The Providence Marriott Downtown complimentary shuttle can take you to the museum – simply visit the front desk to reserve your seats.

That sounds like so much fun, I may have to submit to the fall season and take a walk up there myself! To see upcoming exhibits at the museum, click heresept_19_blog_image.

AUGUST 27, 2013 ~ As Labor Day Weekend approaches, we get a little sad that summer has to end. School is starting for most kids this week. Traffic picks up. There’s a little bite in the air at night. September is a time of transition.
September is also a great time to make plans for a visit to Providence! The city shines this time of year! There are three WaterFire events this month as well as multiple festivals and farmer’s markets. Theater comes back to Trinity Repertory Theater celebrating its 50th season  and to Providence Performing Arts Center after the summer hiatus.  You can still catch the Local Made exhibits at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art. Locally Made expands across several RISD Museum galleries with multiple components, celebrating the rich and diverse talent in Providence and nearby communities. The exhibition encompasses paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, film, and video. At the center of Locally Made is One Room, an experimental space with roots in New England’s long tradition of community storytelling, performance, and knowledge sharing. Artists, designers, performers, and other community innovators share their ideas and processes through daily talks, creative experiments, art demonstrations, and unexpected happenings. September also brings Providence’s very first Food Conference called Taste Trekkers! A weekend full of tastings, demonstrations and discussions about food and culinary travel! Want to know why Providence was voted #1 city in the US by Travel & Leisure readers? Attend this conference and you’ll certain get the answer!
What if you want to get away and not do a thing…well, maybe a martini and a manicure or a free 30 minute personal training session to help satisfy the never-ending quest to keep to your work-out routine.  Check out the Providence Marriott’s many options for overnight getaways. There’s truly something for everyone. The outdoor pool at the Providence Marriott Downtown stays open until at least Columbus Day weekend so summer’s not really over yet!
