Holiday Celebrations in Providence

About 1 year ago by Jennifer |  No Comments   comment

December 6, 2013 ~ Last week  I cooked my first Thanksgiving Dinner at my home and my family came to me. It was a GREAT idea in theory. No traffic. I get to decide when we eat and WHAT we eat.  I don’t have to do the dishes…that’s a rule in my family. You host, no dishes.  For the most part, I was very grateful for such a splendid table in my tiny house surrounded by loving members of my family. The food was awesome! Thanks Mom for making the mashed potatoes. Meg, your Sweet Potato Pie was “totally cray”. And Dad, thanks for motivating me to continuously brew fresh coffee in the event that we might simply fall asleep at the table because we were so happy. It was a great day. The best part was not about being in control or not having to do dishes but the LAUGHTER. Thanksgiving Day is a long holiday. It’s an all day event. So between the discussions about what walls I can knock down in my house and how long should the turkey be in the oven? We laughed. We laughed and made memories that will be very precious to each of us.

That’s what holiday celebrations are about. Not shopping. Not who has the biggest tree ( I am pretty sure I have the smallest one and perhaps the tackiest – see pic below). It’s laughter that bonds people and makes everything seem OK.  Make sure you get a good dose of laughter this holiday season. It’s always a little sad after Santa leaves so be sure to book a special New Year’s Eve celebration this year at the Providence Marriott Downtown. Celebrate the joyous times and laugh about the silly ones. How will you laugh in New Year’s Eve in Providence this year? Did I mention my cornbread stuffing rocked?

WATERFIRE WEEKENDS IN PROVIDENCE

About 1 year ago by Jennifer |  No Comments   comment

September 26, 2013 ~ Another celebration of WaterFire will take place in Providence this weekend. One of my absolute favorite performances will take place – the koi fish procession. This is truly remarkable and if you haven’t seen it…you surely should! Imagine…crackling fires along the Providence River with illuminated over-sized koi “swimming” upstream above the flames. It’s so beautiful that it’s breath-taking.   Volunteers dedicate their time (and canoes, kayaks, etc) to assist in this project of art.  In fact, WaterFire could not take place without their loyal team of volunteers and the donations they collect throughout the season. Be sure to stop by and see how you can help.

So don’t miss out on this weekend’s WaterFire. The koi fish and all the other events will certainly make for a fun evening.

Fall Arrives in Providence This Weekend

About 1 year ago by Jennifer |  No Comments   comment

September 19, 2013 ~ The first day of autumn is this Sunday. Do you welcome it with open arms or are you like me…clinging onto summer as if your life depends on it? I don’t know why I resist it every year. Fall is such a beautiful time of year to visit Providence. The weather is usually great – warm during the day and crisp at night – no humidity. The East Side is simply gorgeous! As the leaves turn, it becomes a picturesque  New England neighborhood. A stroll down Benefit Street is sure to leave you wanting to discover the RISD Museum of Art. The Museum of Art Rhode Island School of Design acquires, preserves, exhibits, and interprets works of art and design representing diverse cultures from ancient times to the present. Distinguished by its relationship to Rhode Island School of Design, the Museum educates and inspires artists, designers, students, scholars, and the general public through exhibitions, programs, and publications. By booking the Art, Food & Wine Experience, you can visit the museum, enjoy a bottle of wine upon arrival to your room and have a bite to eat in the infamous Providence Marriott Greatroom. With the holidays fast approaching, you will not want to miss RISD Works – some locals refer to it as the Museum’s gift shop but it’s so much more. All items for sale are true works of art and are designed by alumni and staff of the Rhode Island School of Design. The Providence Marriott Downtown complimentary shuttle can take you to the museum – simply visit the front desk to reserve your seats.

That sounds like so much fun, I may have to submit to the fall season and take a walk up there myself! To see upcoming exhibits at the museum, click heresept_19_blog_image.

So today, I ask you to be thankful for the housekeeping team in the hotel where you stay. It’s a dirty job and some really awesome people take pride and genuine care in doing it.
